■ The Familistère
Jean-Baptiste André Godin (1817-1888)

The Familistère. An avant-garde nineteenth-century housing estate.
1859. The Industrial Revolution caused a massive population shift from the country to the towns. The new urban proletariat lived in extremely insalubrious conditions. Jean-Baptiste André Godin, the founder of the Familistère, purchased six hectares of land nestled in a bend of the River Oise to build The Familistère in Guise for improving workers' life.
Godin was effected by Fourier and accomplished his phalanstère or phalanstery which was a small community of people who lived and worked together in the same building.
The Familistère was a town within a town, and it offered its working class population over 300 comfortable apartments. Finally, in 1870, the last of the residential wings was completed, thirteen years after the central block. Godin's estate made him a pioneer of modern town planning.

■ The Guggenhein Museum in Bilbao
Frank Gehry (1929-)

Bilbao,a port that had seen better days. Its factories and shipyards were closing one after the other. The contemporary president of the autonomous Basque region invited architect Frank Gehry to Bilbao for designing a grand museum building.
The object of the museum had to let the inhabitants take their city back and return to the glory of industrial period and stop fleeing the city as previous generations had done. The museum had to be a monument. The curved shape of main building of museum seems to have dialogues with river. In addition, the architect brought the most important bridge, Puente de la Salve, into his plans. Not only designed the museum, the architect in fact made a real urban project.
A complete museum project changed inhabitants' life and their feeling about this city. Besides that, it brought economic effects which include tax revenue, job opportunities and so on. This can be called the “Bilbao effect” that means the transmutation metal into gold.
