井上裕子 Yuko Inoue: The Art of Emotions (CD) 【Simax Classics】

SKU: PSC1372

The title of Yuko Inoue's debut album says it all. The sound of the hammer piano takes us back 200 years in time - to a time when composers developed a wonderful new tonal language in step with the development of the instruments. A time when music really becomes the art form of emotions!

C.P.E. Bach (1714-1788)
It is, of course, also the music of J.S. Bach's second eldest son, who is the starting point for this release. C.P.E was one of the foremost developers of an individual musical expression. Some places write C.P.E. without bar lines, in a free and improvisational character. 'Für Kenner und Liebhaber' is the famous title of a collection of piano works containing 36 compositions. The title of the collection shows the desire to reach widely - but also deeply - among music lovers with knowledge.

Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven
The big three within Viennese classicism all have a lot to thank C.P.E. for. Haydn was a great fan throughout his life, and is one of the composers who studied his works in depth. The Mozart piece on this release is actually a bit a-typical for the composer: In a letter he writes that his wife Constanze put a lot of pressure on him to write a piece in the Bach style. When Beethoven published the variations in opus 35, he insisted that he had used an entirely new style of composition. The motif comes from Prometheus, and he uses it in several other places as well, including in the third symphony 'Eroica'.

The hammer piano and Yuko Inoue
These composers belonged to four different generations at a time when piano instruments were developing a lot. The hammer piano (1780 original) from Edvind Beunk's collection that Yuko has used for this recording is an instrument they would all have a passionate relationship with. Composers at this time were excited by innovations on the instrument front, and were inspired. Today we see how pianists 'rediscover' these original timbres when they can sit down to an instrument from the composer's own time. Yuko Inoue is educated at the Conservatoire in Tokyo and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. She has worked especially with the Fantasia style at C.P.E. Bach. In addition to solo concerts, she has also done projects with the Klassische Philharmonie Bonn, Kölner Kammerorchestre, Sinfonieorchestre Aachen, Det Norske Kammerorkester and the Utrecht Festival voor Oude Muziek.
